Achieving peace in Ukraine will be a long-term effort. The best Western leaders can do in this situation is to leave behind the illusion that a quick fix is possible and the explicable but counterproductive fatigue. Only Western re-affirmed commitment to the cause can gradually alter the Kremlin’s calculus.
The last paragraph makes me think that this author may just be laying out the reasons for why suing for peace now is unrealistic, that is, the reasons for continuing the war and sending more weapons to Ukraine.
Basically, the article reads of as “all these concessions we have to give to russia [because we rejected previous, more generous peace terms] are too painful to go through, so let’s keep fighting”.
Yeah it’s sober all the way to the very end where the author starts bleating about the need to keep going. Realistically though, it’s pretty clear that the west can no longer prop up Ukraine materially while Ukraine lacks the manpower to keep going. So, people can keep talking about these re-affirmed commitments all they like, but it’s like me wishing for a pony.
The lead paragraph is pure projection, making it clear that if this article has any value it’s not in the form of the author’s insights.
Overall, I’d say that it’s probably the most sober article I’ve seen yet in western mainstream media. It actually acknowledges that Russian army is growing stronger, and that Russia is capable of achieving a military victory. It doesn’t lean on the usual tropes of Russia using meat wave tactics, Russian economy collapsing, and so on. It basically acknowledges that Russia holds all the cards and will be in the position to dictate terms.
Interesting. Perhaps Trump’s “faction” will be disseminating more info about the reality in Ukraine in order to manufacture support for a “pivot to China”. Or at least ease the policy change by weakening the support for Ukraine.
I think another big factor here is that they wouldn’t want the dems to pin the collapse in Ukraine on them. So, they have to forcefully establish the fact that the war is already lost out of the gate. I expect we’ll be seeing a sharp change in the narrative happening as a result.
