due to the new rules of European Union, whatsapp has/had one year - iirc - to open the app to talk with other apps. iirc, this started on February/March of 2024 and we are in 2025. Anyone knows more details or news about it? This is ONLY applicable to European Union countrys, iirc.

I’ve been hoping for this a long while so I can eventually delete the cancer that is a Meta app from my phone. The Matrix solution to bridge with WhatsApp never seemed particularly elegant to me, so I’ve avoided it. Anyone else have luck with it?

It kicked in the 6th of March. There’s no plans to open up for this outside of the EU, as you mentioned.

The latest I can find is this from Meta:

Update on September 6, 2024 at 9am PT:

Today, we’ll publish the Messenger Reference Offer for third-party providers which will outline what will be required to interoperate with the service.

This is for Facebook Messenger, which is under exactly the same requirement as WhatsApp. Both is from Meta, and they will both follow the same Signal Protocol.

Unfortunately I don’t know anymore than that. But let’s say they have a year to be done with this, we might see something soon.

EDIT: Here’s the source. There’s much more information in there.
