For this Friday Movie Night, first up is The Taste of Things (2024), a 19th-century French romance about a chef who attempts to woo his long-time lover into marrying him by cooking delicious meals for her. A whole lot of food porn ensues inside a rustic, cozy environment that seems tailor-made for the cottagecore crowd. This is the best-known and best-reviewed work to date of director Tran Anh Hung, and was France’s submission for the Best International Film Oscar last year. Excellent reviews for this one, so let’s check it out.

After that is Memoir of a Snail (2024), a darkly humorous Australian stop-motion animated feature from Adam Eliot, the guy behind the similarly-themed Mary and Max (2009). It follows a pair of twins who are put through the hellish foster-care system of 1970s Australia after their mother dies and their dysfunctional father proves unable to take care of them. The aesthetic looks pretty awesome here, and reviews are excellent, so we’re watching it.

We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here:
