Some of the most popular content on Facebook leading up to the election was AI-generated Elon Musk inspiration porn made by people in other countries that went viral in the US.
For Facebook specifically, they’ve constantly been in the crosshairs of government regulators for (amongst other things) anti-competitive practices, privacy violations and so on (and that list only goes to October 2021).
Up to now they’ve escaped any serious consequences for their many violations of the law, broken regulations, and ignored consent decrees, and thus have been allowed to grow unchecked as a result. Simply enforcing the laws as written back in the day would have helped. Now? I have no idea. Legal enforcement will not be coming any time soon.
