    The West has already lost the strategic confrontation that the war in Ukraine represents. This is not only due to a blind or lacking strategy, but also to the fact that the two pillars of the West, the nation state on the one hand and religion on the other, have disintegrated. As Friedrich Nietzsche predicted, the end of religion would be followed by nihilism. In the state of the West, however, this nihilism is deadly, almost suicidal, according to Todd. The process of disintegration is particularly evident in the United States of America, Russia’s main adversary.

      It’s not actually that weird, religion has traditionally been used as a tool for social cohesion. If religion is abandoned without a new unifying ideology to replace it then society starts to become atomized the way we see happening in the west. I would argue that in communist states, the ideology fills the role of religion and unifies society towards a common goal.
