Framing a game release as a political soft power move is pretty bonkers stuff.
Do people say these kinds of things when big games come out of other countries? Was Disco Elysium an Estonian attempt at exerting subtle global dominance?
This wouldn’t be the first time somebody tried to fearmonger over a game set in one of the “bad” countries. I remember when some journalists made up a false dichotomy where you either play Atomic Heart and condone Russia or don’t and condemn Russia.
I think it signifies that gamers are hungry for anything without a number after the name. (Sequal) also that Chinese people will buy anything with Wukong in it.
