I never really cared about upvotes and downvotes, but I liked that my comments and participation meant something to someone at one time or another. I liked that when I posted a comment or asked a question people could look through my post history to learn more about me and answer accordingly. More than anything I miss my saved posts and comments and enjoyed going back to read through what was important or funny to me at a particular moment in time. I don’t have close friends or any family that lives within 1,000 miles so the connections I made through Reddit meant something.

I’m grieving.

Agree. The whole situation really really sucks. I was on Reddit since 2011 with the same account. It’s been hard to just leave all that behind.

I was on for 12 years, it became a bit of an addiction, too be sure. Lots of smiles, so much to learn. Some trolly experiences I could have done without. When the IPO thing came about, and the API change pushing out 3rd party apps, that got all too annoying fast. And I’ve long been an advocate of open source software, etc., to it’s better in the Fediverse. Yay!

And I’m with ya, grief is a big part of the experience at the moment. Hang in there, it gets better.

14 years, 51k comment karma. It definitely feels very strange to leave it all behind.

I used to have an occasional habit of scrolling back through my own comments. It took me a long time to understand why. I don’t really participate in real-identity social media since I stopped using Facebook like a decade ago. So as an avid commenter for so long, my Reddit history is pretty much the most thorough and incisive chronicle of my own thoughts and evolution as a person. Almost a memoir. Seeing the types of stuff I was into, the way I thought and wrote, my opinions on the world, and how they changed over such a long period of time is really valuable to me.

Fortunately you can file a GDPR request and get a copy of the whole thing for yourself.

I just searched my old username and found all my post and comment history, but the saved posts are hard to leave behind.

–The guy who didn’t know what a potato was –The couple who now have “shit the basement” drunk on their drunken meter

There were so many funny posts and comments that made me laugh out loud on lonely and sad days.

It means little from some rando, but your grief is both real and valid. May it fuel a rekindled passion here, and make for a beacon that calls friends lost and seeking, and also burn away the sorrow.

And if that light helps burn the old hangout to the ground with the landlord inside? I’ll gladly help with alibi.

I’m also going to miss it. It was a fantastic knowledge base. I learned so damn many little hobbies through it.

I started the grieving process once RIF announced it’d be shutting down, but it actually felt good nuking the history of my 7-year-old 99k/190k account before deleting it.

Fuck spez, the future is in the fediverse.

Perhaps it would be a good idea to open a Reddit museum on the fediverse so people in the future can read the stories of broken arms, jolly ranchers, the Swamps of Dagobah, Streetlamp LeMoose, Kevin, and Rome Sweet Rome.

It wasn’t hard to drive up karma on Reddit… just find a sub where everyone shares your point of view and make snarky comments at the expense of someone or something they hate. Rinse and repeat for about four years. I’m not saying it’s the ONLY thing I posted over there, but it’s certainly the easiest way to boost your stats. I think I had 70K of karma by the time I deleted my account, and it happened organically, without a lot of deliberate effort.

Over 15 years here. All gone over ‘vote manipulation’ which is a complete joke as Reddit manipulates the vote counts constantly. Only they can do that!

Good riddance. Lemmy and similar already have a better experience.

They banned you for vote manipulation? What did you do?

One account got banned from a local subreddit for posting with a < 60 day account. Then I forgot about that (wasn’t a big deal) and posted in that same sub with an alt. So a ban for a small technical reason turned into getting banned from the whole site. Way to go Reddit!!
