My experience as a Jr High teacher is that the kids are already there. There is a growing sense of existential dread every year in my groups. I was surprised (and proud of my kids) when some of them started requesting more curriculum on climate change. I incorporate lessons on the topic wherever possible.
What’s striking is how sad/depressed a lot of these kids are. More and more of them are showing signs of checking out, and I don’t blame them. It’s heartbreaking.
