Hi guys, I’ve recently (a few months ago) started playing Guilty Gear (because I saw some cool Faust fanart on tumblr) and I really love it so far. But I do have some questions and I wanted to get some opinions cause Google wasn’t super helpful.
- Am I supposed to use the d-pad or the joystick for combos? I’ve been using joystick for movement and combos, and the d-pad for dashing, but I didn’t know if that was right.
- What’s the recommended order to play the games in in order to get all the story as well as the fighting bits? I didn’t know there was a storyline so I don’t want to miss stuff.
- Is there a good beginner’s guide with a list of all the moves that I could easily refer to when playing? I’m still discovering moves and combos I didn’t know existed lol. Thanks in advance!

- Most people generally recommend using the d-pad but I have a friend that uses both the d-pad and the joystick. The thing is, the joystick will probably start drifting with the use and your inputs may be more inconsistent as well, due to the 8-way movement instead of the 4-way of the d-pad.
- I think you can play it in release order. But I just watched these videos by WoolieVS (which are also approved by Arc System Works) about the lore. There’s stuff that’s spread over manga and even pachinko and these do a great job of summarizing them.
- Dustloop is your best friend. There’s a wealth of information there. If you want a more digestible guide, I suggest going on Youtube and look for beginner’s guides. I suggest watching more than one, just so you can cross-check information. For your main character, there are videos embedded on Dustloop that explain the basics but try and watch matches from top players of your character, you can learn a lot from that.
And most of all, have fun!
Alright, thank you so much! I’ll definitely go check out those videos and that wiki!
