So Long, and Thanks for All the Feedback
As you have no doubt heard by now, Reddit management introduced changes recently that have led to rule and moderation changes across many subreddits. Because of these changes, we no longer feel that Reddit is an appropriate place to post official content or refer our players to.
We want to thank you for all the feedback and discussion you’ve participated in in past changelog threads. You are of course welcome to post unofficial update threads going forward, and if you want to reach the team with feedback about the game, please visit our feedback site at feedback.minecraft.net or contact us on one of our official social media channels.
The text is rather polite and professional, but at the end of the day it boils down to “we’ll GTFO of this place. Keep discussing Minecraft here if you want, but you won’t get official content through Reddit.”
And who’s “we”? The one posting the text above was u/sliced_lime aka Mikael Hedberg, a game developer at Mojang and interim tech lead for the Minecraft launcher. Odds are that his position represents Mojang AB’s position. That is, the position of a subsidiary of Microsoft.
Yup - a subsidiary of one of the GAFAM companies is refusing to deal with Reddit.
They had endless issues with the mod team at /r/minecraft causing controversies and attacking users to start with (someone building a monument to their deceased girlfriend, for example, was perosnally attacked by mods for “excessive self promotion” or something else equally stupid) and generally just doing a really shit job of it, none of which Mojang employees had any power over despite it directly impacting Minecraft’s public image. so this is a convenient excuse for them to fully cut ties with that shithole. Great timing too, I’m sure major companies beginning to purge from Reddit looks great to investors…
Yeah, r/minecraft mods are rather shitty, so perhaps this whole issue was just the necessary push for Mojang to get away from it.
I wouldn’t go so far to say that this represents sentiment at Microsoft.
But, I think all tech companies will jump at the opportunity to break their dependancy on other tech companies. Can you imagine if Microsoft employees were caught using Gmail?

It doesn’t necessarily represent the sentiment of the parent company (Microsoft) but it likely does for the subsidiary (Mojang AB), due to the position of Mikael Hedberg there. And at least in principle it shows that Microsoft doesn’t oppose this position, otherwise it’d prevent its subsidiary from doing so.

Yup. And that adds another factor that pigboy perhaps didn’t take into account - that other, bigger, meaner corporations would start flying in circles around Reddit, shredding it into pieces.
