What I guess is that, he had tried to catch that butterfly but injured it by mistake, maybe he feels guilty or didn’t want to free it yet, so he brings it close, scared of it flying away.
Maybe, this shows how ‘uncommon’ his behaviour was as a kid.
Or again, simply he, as a kid was innocent.
