Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko says its main Formula 1 outfit’s boss Christian Horner wasn’t convinced about signing Nyck de Vries to AlphaTauri – and feels Horner is currently being proven right.

After his performance in Monza I was expecting better results from DEV. His qualifying times are okay, that AT just looks slow on Saturday, but he just doesn’t seem to have the race pace on any track. Tsunoda generally seems to at least sometimes be able to squeeze results out of the car while De Vries stagnates.

It’s a shame. So many good results in other fields but just isn’t getting it in F1. I’m really glad to see Tsunoda step up to the plate and bring that AT into the points as a leader of the team. Also, still love hearing his hothead attitude on the radio!

AT needs a better car most of all. Let’s not forget they are currently last in the constructors championship. Tsunoda alone would’ve been able to eke out a few more points if the car was more competitive, and perhaps if the car was easier to drive DEV may have shown better results.

Yeah I think we all expected him to step in with more competence than he’s shown, given his age and experience. I’m not on the De Vries hate train by any means, I’d love to see him find his footing, but it’s been a pretty tough season so far.

And yes, great to see how much Tsunoda’s stepped up! He’s been fantastic this season.
