Hey folks - kbin was kind of thrust upon us over the past few weeks, with more and more instances spinning up over the weekend. There are similarities to other platforms … but also, it’s different enough that it can be confusing at times!

This guide will evolve over time, the FAQ at the bottom will grow as folks as questions or I see them elsewhere, and we’ll all be bin pro’s in no time!

What’s kbin?

At it’s most basic … kbin is a collection of services that interact in order to show you the content you’re looking at right now!

Digging deeper, it differs from similar platforms in that it’s decentralized … which means that instead of relying on a single server, it consists of many interconnected servers that allow you to view federated data / users across those servers.

What’s a Magazine?

If you were to compare it to another platform, a magazine is akin to a subreddit on Reddit or a community on Lemmy. It’s the subgroup or category where a collection of content and discussions will take place.

You can create your own magazines if you do not see one that aligns with what you are wanting to post. You do so by clicking the + sign in the upper right corner and choosing Magazine.

You can also search for “federated” magazines from other kbin instances! On the NerdBin site, you’ll see a search bar. Say you want to add the Nintendo magazine on the OtherBin kbin instance. You’d search for @Nintendo@OtherBin.com and once it finds it - you’ll then be able to see it under /Threads. Once a single person searches, it’s added to the list for everyone to enjoy!

What’s a Thread?

Threads are posts that allow you to share videos, links, or “articles” (text posts) within a magazine. You can add these by clicking the + sign in the upper right corner and choosing link, article, or video.

What’s a post?

Inside of a Magazine, you’ll see microblogs in the top navigation bar. Posts are these micro blogs - and instead of being threaded for discussion under threads … these are displayed in line with one another.
