Hey everyone,

Reddit drama has caused the original /r/RealTesla community to become marked private. The /r/RealTesla moderators did NOT cause this. I’ll provide updates here with what I know when I figure it out.

I’m contacting the /r/RealTesla moderators on Reddit and Discord. I’m not sure if there’s other channels they listen to, but if anyone out there knows how to contact them please let me know. I’d like to help out and use Lemmy.world/c/realtesla to help them out in any way possible.

Hopefully this is just a temporary blip. If any Redditors are finding their way over here somehow… Welcome! I’ve created this Lemmy.world community as a “lifeboat” from July 2023 Reddit issues. I hope you find your stay here at lemmy.world/c/RealTesla as productive as it was at Reddit/r/RealTesla. For you former Redditors who are used to “Open Signups”, Lemmy.world has a signup process now. I recommend you sign up at https://sh.itjust.works/signup. Then you can access https://sh.itjust.works/c/realtesla@lemmy.world.

EDIT: Looks like /r/cliffordcat has figured something out behind the scenes. https://old.reddit.com/r/RealTesla/comments/1c7h244/were_back_now_we_need_to_talk/

I’ll keep this topic featured a little bit longer. In case anyone wants some help joining Lemmy and participating in this “lifeboat” here.

EDIT2:
These seem to be the best links that describe what’s going on.

As mentioned on Discord, this kind of thing has happened several times in the past. The RT sub was claimed to be brigading multiple times in the past when posts were made about accounts being banned in a tesla fan sub, and people would comment saying they too had been banned.

Ultimately, I don’t use reddit and I couldn’t care less what happens over there. The tesla fan sub mods are delicate people that can’t fathom a world in which anybody sees Elon as a conman or his company products as the low quality gadgets they are. When you turn out to be a dissatisfied owner, it blows their mind and their world crumbles. Thew new mods for RT have their work cut out for them, because the Tesla weirdos will report the sub over and over again and eventually it will just be a source of constant frustration.

Given what the (now reopened) /r/RealTesla says, it might be that the mods really did take the sub private but maybe didn’t realize it’d lock so many people out.

You’re right in that we’ve been banhammered before by the Reddit Admins, which is part of the reason why I’m working here at Lemmy.world to try to have a “lifeboat”, in case any other Reddit problems ever come up again. But maybe I jumped the gun on my assumptions in this case.

Here’s the DM I sent to you on reddit, once I came back from focusing on real life this afternoon and evening - after I took the sub private, following the suggestion from Modtimus_Prime_RT… whose account now looks deleted. Oh for fucks sake, he was the primary active mod other than myself…

*It’s been a melodramatic few days. It may well be the case it’s unrelated to developments within Tesla - there’s certainly been a long enough period of folks using u/ posts on RealTesla to harass the mods of the main forums that, even though we delete those soon as we see them, it’s believable they might for that reason alone do their Streisand Effect robo-bans. But it’s also the case that harassment of our sub and today negative admin attention came on only as the stock went off a cliff for days on end.

I set the sub private after another mod suggested it, in reaction to a warning from the reddit admins that our sub, to their view, exists to harass the main Tesla subs and their mods. The timing on that message was almost comical, to be honest, as it came shortly after yet another round of one of their mods and I coordinating on removing genuinely harassing posts targeting them, posted by trolls onto RealTesla.

Then, separately, there’s been a week-long campaign to mark seemingly every damned post or comment in RealTesla as “targeted harassment.” I suspect the volume of harassment reports - even though they were almost entirely fraudulent - are why the admins came in.*

Also, in the hours since cliff re-opened the sub, there’s been two waves of mass-reporting of comments and posts, including comments from over six months ago. Per advice I got on the mod support subreddit yesterday, I’ve been submitting fraudulent reports to the admins… not that I trust it’ll do anything for us right now.

For future reference: eridyn is a moderator from RealTesla, one of the ones putting in a lot of work after the July 2023 Reddit issues. I can also confirm he sent me this message over on Reddit.

Thanks for checking in and the explanation!

Also, whatever had happened to Modtimus_Prime_RT, he’s back in action. Seems his arguing with reddit admins might have gotten a 1-day suspension… The only difference between his responses to them and mine was whether undeserved politeness was a 6/10 or an 8/10.

Waiting out a 3 day ban for a comment that reddit won’t even show me anymore. I’m honestly not even sure what I posted :D
