Hi all, just purchased a pretty much brand-new deck (used for 2hrs) from eBay. I’ve also got the receipt. Is there anything I should be aware of? It was only purchased last month, will valve honour any warranty?

Edit. Turned up yesterday and it’s immaculate so all good so far! Doesn’t even look used so I’ll count this as a good buy for now!

I cannot post because of language settings

Edit: NM I can. This was just a test as I’ve been getting errors posting comments on this community. (Language_not_allowed)

Id check to see if the steam deck was opened at some point. See if there’s any wear or signs around the screw holes on the back.

Id also do a factory reset too, since it’s essentially a computer, you don’t know what software may have been installed.

Warranty is not transferable. You’ll want to check along the edges for any tool marks. If it’s been opened and had anything replaced, unless they’re better than 99% of the DIY steam deck crowd, they left small traces of getting past the backplate.

Watch a video or two on how to replace the SSD, and go looking for marks around the areas people said are easier to slide things into to pry the plate off. If you want to open it yourself, you can also check the screws for any marks as well as ensure there’s no glaring issues with the internals in case they tried to replace the joysticks or something. Valve was pretty clean with mine, every screw pretty much pristine.

For what it’s worth, I believe the general consensus is that Valve cannot reject your warranty claim for the device having been opened under US law (the FTC has gone after other manufacturers for this).

There are also a lot of reports that Valve are cool with it as long as whatever broke the device wasn’t caused by the user fiddling with it.

No, yeah, the opening of the device is more so a “did they replace/damage anything” and less of a warranty problem. Second hand sale is what stopped warranty

The warranty is transferable though. If it’s still within the 1 year manufacturer warranty valve will still warranty it, as long as it hasn’t been reported stolen

    Happy for you man.

    What storage does it have?

I am playing Diablo 4 at the moment, run flowlessly, but Battle.Net is a bit of a pain to handle on Linux.

Here are some tools you would want to install:

    • CryoUtilities: a tool to optimize SteamOS (Mostly RAM and Storage).
    • EmuDeck: it will install a various range of emulators, sadly BIOS are not included.
    • Docky Loader: it allow you to load Plugins and constomize your experience with SteamOS.
    • Heroic Launcher: Linux Client for Epic Store and GOG.com.

For the rest, have fun. :)

EDOT: As others have said, you better off to full factory reset it, as a PC it can be tempered easily.

Thanks! Sorry for the delay, not getting any notifications of replies on Lemmy for some reason.

Got DeckyLoader and EmuDeck on. 512gb with Samsung 512gb Evo card 🙂
