Marked as spoiler, but I’ll still be vague where possible.

Near the beginning of Act 6, when you are walking through the city towards the underworld, you come across a group of cultists that mention “lord of hatred” in terms of worship. Your character and party/allies even call it out - “why would they say that? Lilith considers him the bad guy? Interesting…”

Was that referencing something I missed? (I finished the campaign, so I can’t be spoilered) Or was that just supposed to mention how its all a game to the evils? What did it mean?!

Hopefully I cross-posted my own post correctly? I’ve talked more here in the past 2 weeks than several years of reddit!

I would need to go back to remember exactly, but were those Triune cultists or Lilith’s cultists? Triune cultists originally worship the Three Prime Evils. Actually, the original form of the Triune cult worshipped the Primes without knowing they were evil.

I believe at some point Lilith co-opted the remaining Triune cultists into her order, they would probably still hold reverence to the original Primes in addition to her. I don’t think the average cultist would have been aware of the rivalry between her and her father. If anything, they’d probably see her as being the Daughter of Hatred a kind of blessing.

I think this is most accurate. I think the likely hood is Mephisto wanted to get out of hell for some reason. Lilith plan was to absorb her father, similar to how Diablo did it in 3. Clearly the final boss of the DLC is gonna have to be Diablo so Mephisto will probably lead us to that. I quite enjoyed D4, can’t wait for the DLC

this makes sense, I think? I guess I’m reading too much into thinking the game/writers were “hinting” at something. Between @Addfwyn@lemmy.ml 's logic that the cultists are just worshipping “the hatred family” and/or your take that Mephisto might have been jumping on an opportunity to get out (ahead of Lilith) means the cultists have something to worship either way.

        thanks, Lemmists!

I think I agree with you that they are hinting towards something. Ultimately Lilith isn’t a Prime Evil, she even helped create Sanctuary. The game gets us to immediately start doubting who the big bad is in the 6th act. The rain of blood? Probably Mephisto not Lilith. I think Mephisto was allowing Lilith to co-opt the Triune cult, as he knew they would remain ultimately loyal to him/other primes. It is likely in the 6th act they simply stop pretending for Lilith and are awaiting the return of Mephisto. Was a great YouTube video on it. Let me see if I can find it

Lilith is Mephisto’s daughter… Lilith was also banging Inarius.

If you a psychopathic female succubi that has daddy issues and your dad has spent literal eons trying to murder your boy toy…

Do you think she’s happy with papa?

Edit: FFS. I need to sleep.

My perspective is that it’s supposed to be part of the “who is the real enemy” angle that was a part of the later half of the game. There was this constant back and forth as to whether we should focus on Lilith vs Mephisto as the one to destroy. That process culminates in how the ending plays out.

This part is just a reminder to the player that Mephisto is still a force of evil that can’t be ignored or underestimated.
