Reddit does greedy API change

A ton of subreddits decide to do protests

r/196 moderator’s do poll to determine the length of their protest

Only 2 options are “2 days” and Forever

Poll gets flooded by bigots wanting to shut the sub down forever

Mods look at poll and decide to kill the sub

They make off-site migration post which split’s the sub into several smaller community’s

There are ~600 comments on the post begging the mods this is a horrible idea and not to kill the sub

Mod “addresses” the controversy without actually addressing or responding to it

Comments are auto-removed so nobody can respond to them

mfw destroying the most successful non-bigoted meme sub does more harm to gay people then reddit

Thanks for the pride month gift, 196 mods!

As much as I get the idea, a strike with an end date is ridiculous and makes no difference whatsoever. The reddit CEO even said that he was just going to wait it out, showing how 2 days is nothing. And changing it to forever does seem to have had a real impact, because now they are actually trying to force subs open. However, yes, the mods really should have endorsed one place and gone with it I completely agree, which could have kept the community alive while still not being on reddit in protest

Dude, Spez has said he doesn’t care about reddit users. He’s said that he’s gonna wait it out. He does. Not. Care. And shutting down 196 over there is a show of “fuck this shit”. I’m sorry you miss your shitposting subreddit but this is about blind users no longer being able to use the mobile app. Mods are going to lose the tools they need to KEEP subs like 196 free of bigots and assholes. So breaking the strike does nothing but show Spez you care more about being able to post your pics than about making the place safe and accessible. Get some perspective here.

The mods were the ones doing all the work (which I can tell you, for a lefty queer sub, was A LOT) of keeping the sub a “safe space.”

But sure, they’re “killing it” because reddit won’t give them proper moderation tools and they’re tired and would like to have a real life outside of moderating away fascist brigadiers.

If you want it so bad why don’t you take Steve Huffman’s bait and volunteer to mod it yourself?

You do realize the people who own reddit sympathize more with fascists than lefty queers, right?

But sure, keep sticking around on a site that wants to platform the people who want you dead, that totally makes sense.

People complained about the Lemmy admins being tankies or whatever, but I’d way the fuck rather be on a site run by them as opposed to a site run by a fucking pasty white fascist.

I still think it would be wiser to collectively migrate to one place, but otherwise perfect response.

Yeah this is a pretty good response IMO. As others have pointed out, the point of a strike is to withhold the labor that actually makes corporations money. Reddit has never compensated the moderators that keep the site from turning into a cesspool that advertisers wouldn’t touch with a 20-foot stick, and they’ve been completely unwilling to accommodate the users that actually provide the content for their site. A strike is completely valid here and any strike is a battle. The “we want to work with the bosses” approach is a losing battle, and the strongest strikes take a fighting approach. My only critique is that I’d maybe give a preferred alternative but honestly given the extremely sudden circumstances of this whole thing I understand the fragmentation.

This and !twobestfriendsplay are basically the only communities I miss/want to see come back on different platforms but I’m glad there’s at least a general place to keep track of things.
