I get it’s like an aggregate of sites, but is it like it’s own network kind of thing, where each site pulls from each other, or more like each site is a home, with windows to see into the other homes? and is it exclusive to just social media, or are there other uses for it?

It’s like having lots of different social media websites, but they can all talk to each other.
To clarify the analogy: The neighborhoods represent the different servers in the Fediverse, each with its own community of users and its own rules. The community centers represent the social media platforms that are hosted on each server. These are the places where people can go to interact with each other, share content, and participate in discussions. The city represents the entire Fediverse network, made up of all the interconnected servers and social media platforms.
The cool thing about the Fediverse is that there is no one big company in charge of everything. Each community center is run by different people, so you can choose which one you want to go to. And if you don’t like any of them, you can even start your own community center! This means that you have more control over your online life, and you can decide what kind of rules you want to follow.
