What are some of your favorite science fiction books and why? If you had to pick only a few. As of writing this post my favorites are the following.

  • The Quantum Magician
  • Three Body Problem
  • Children of Time

I tend to like in-depth explanations of the fictional science that exists in-universe as well as a good mystery.

This is easier done by favorite authors for me… I lean towards near-future books with something interesting to say or space opera with a very personal view of things (vs Three Body Problem, which IMHO is almost entirely idea-driven). Of the top of my head, these are a few of my favorite authors and some of my favorite books by each.

    • William Gibson (Neuromancer trilogy, Bridges trilogy, The Peripheral)
    • Bruce Sterling (Schismatrix Plus, Heavy Weather, Holy Fire, Ascendancies short story collection)
    • Neal Stephenson (Anathem, The Diamond Age, Termination Shock, REAMDE, Zodiac)
    • Charles Stross (Accelerando, Glass House, Halting State, Rule 34, Singularity Sky, Iron Sunrise)
    • Cory Doctorow (Walkaways, Red Team Blues, Little Brother)
    • Walter Jon Williams (Hardwired, Voices in the Whirlwind, This Is Not A Game)
    • Michael Swanwick (Vacuum Flowers, Bow-wow Said the Dog trilogy)
    • Daniel Suarez (Daemon, Freedom, Delta V, Critical Mass)
    • Richard K Morgan (the Takeshi Kovacs trilogy, Thirteen, Thin Air)
    • Karl Schroeder (Stealing Worlds, the Virga series, Our Lady of Mazes)
    • Roger Zelazny (Lord of Light, the Amber Chronicles, Dilvish the Damned, many others)
    • Larry Niven (Ringworld & so many other good books in his Known Universe, The Magic Goes Away)
    • Iain M Banks (Player of Games, Excession, almost all the other Culture novels)
    • Ian McDonald (Out on Blue Six, River of Gods, the Luna trilogy)
    • C J Cherryh (Heavy Time, Hellburner, Rimrunners, Merchanter’s Luck, Trippoint)
    • John DeChancie (Starrigger trilogy)
    • Steve Perry (the Matador series, the Venture Silk duology)
    • James SA Corey (The Expanse)
