Just purchased a ZX81 (a Timex Sinclair 1000, actually) to add to my collection. It appears to come with the original box, as well as the 16k RAM expansion and cassette audio cables. Do you have any suggestions for games/software I should check out? I’m always interested in seeing what kinds of word processors and productivity software these early computers had. I’ve also emulated the ZX81 on MAME and found myself playing 1k ZX Chess quite a bit, so I’ll definitely get a copy of that. I have a Sony digital recorder that I will try to use to save/load tape data.
Currently, my retro collection includes:
- VIC-20
- C64 (in midst of repairs)
- TI-99/4a that came with original box and all original paperwork, including the invoice!
- Altairduino from Adwater&Stir, super fun kit to build and use
- µKenbak-1, also from Adwater&Stir. It’s a Kenbak-1 on a ruler, basically!
- NEC Versa 4000C laptop, Pentium 120MHz, 16MB of RAM
I really want to get a Commodore Plus/4 … I don’t know why, but I really like that machine, even the silly built-in applications that everyone dumps on. Been keeping an eye out for one at a good price.
I also have a collection of calculators. Some of my collection is documented on my SDF website, https://amrowsell.tx0.org but it needs to be updated as I have a lot of new additions.
Looking forward to being a part of this community!
Wow. Timex Sinclair 1000 was the first computer I ever owned. Wish I still had it; wish I knew what even happened to it
Nice collection. I used to have a ZX Spectrum. BTW, I like the basic design of your web page, we need more of that.
That’s awesome. You’ve gotten a decent video steup running? That’s always been the challenge for working with these sorts of platforms.
I was very young when I had a ZX81 so productivity was not really my concern. One of the games I remember most fondly was Tir Na Nog. Believe it or not, the graphics and game world stunned me!
That’s a sweet collection you have there. The oldest machine I have is a 1977 AVL Sho Pro V multimedia programmer. I should fire it up and see if it still works.
