Kinda new to lemmy so I don’t know all the details of what that would enntail. but I think having a best friends server that accommodates all parts of the community would be neat

There was a user on the subreddit that was willing to at least try setting up an instance. Problem is our community is huge, and apparently we were rivaling r/videos in user engagement on reddit, which means it would probably be somewhat complex to set up an instance of our own. It would also be a whole different kind of moderation for the mods, because it would be moderating a whole server and not just a single community.

I’m still waiting to see what the mods end up doing, but at least we have a small spot claimed here for now.

That sounds like a good idea once things get going a bit more. For now, I feel like this lemmy community is mostly just to gauge interest/willingness to switch over and we can figure out more long-term stuff once it’s clear that there’s enough buy-in.

I agree, the instance thing is already kinda confusing, so may as well see what happens before going that far

instances cost money though, and i feel like i very recently saw a thing that demonstrated that, by and large, people do not donate to keep instances alive. there’s a few places where that’s not true (infosec.exchange over on the Mastodon front, i think, does fairly well) but it’s absolutely not a sure thing.
