As per title. I’m back to modded after a few years, but I’m rather clueless on which version is currently popular.

Bonus question: what are the most common industrial mods nowadays? And are people building their own packs, or downloading them whole?

The cult of the new is pretty strong in modded Minecraft. To be honest, I haven’t done much modded stuff in awhile, but 1.16.5 is a solid choice or at least was back when I last put a pack together.

Create is the big new mod that has everyone buzzing. In some ways it’s a reaction to the RF-ification and magic blocks/multiblocks that dominated the 1.12 era. Everything is very nice and modular, and it reminds me of Rotarycraft in that respect, though they are very different mods.

Dang it, now I want to play some Rotarycraft. Reika has enough 1.7.10 mods that you can essentially put together your own pack of just them, but I digress.

I feel that most people play modpacks nowadays, but maybe I’m biased as a packdev. I’ve seen some good progression packs come out, if that’s your thing. I’m biased towards my pack, Brass, of course, but Create: Above and Beyond is the official Create modpack with loads of custom content. I never got around to playing it, but it looks neat.

I’ll probably go with 1.16.5 then; seems like a sane middle ground. I’m not too eager to adopt the newest version ever, but I feel like enough vanilla content accumulated from 1.7.10 times to now to make the shift worth. (To be honest I didn’t play much with 1.12.)

The cult of the new is pretty strong in modded Minecraft.

It’s weird because I feel like I relate to both sides - toys (mods) get boring once you’ve played enough with them, and there are only so many new ways to use an old toy. Eventually you’ll want new toys. And the older the modpack, the less features it has from that mod called “vanilla”, that every pack seems to have. :^)

But at the same time… I’m not migrating just for the sake of migration, like the “cult of the new” that you mentioned. I remember in 1.12 times that everyone in Reddit was screeching, and trying to boss people around with “why are you playing 1.7? MIGRATE AS I’M ORDERING YOU, REEEE”, and then got all pissy when you still mentioned 1.7. Or actively advocating that losing mods across version is “good”, because we get new mods - as if one thing had much to do with the other.
