Welcome, everyone, to the Lemmy WetShaving Community.
With the API changes at Reddit, some in /r/WetShaving are considering migrating to other platforms. We presently have a growing Mastodon server at http://wetshaving.social, a Discord server, and an IRC channel. The hope is that Lemmy will become a useful addition to those other opportunities for this community to interact. However, that is ultimately up to the community, and if this isn’t working we can try something else.
At the present time this entire thing is an alpha test. I am still working on server configuration. If you encounter any bugs, please message me so I can either figure out what is going wrong, or email our hosting service about it. We are presently one of the only beta testers of Lemmy hosting at knthost.com. They are presently providing us this for free in exchange for beta feedback, and when the beta period ends the cost will be about $10 a month.
Ultimately, once the alpha period is over, the hope is to have a conversation about how we can ensure sustainable self-governance for this community. But, at present, this is all about just getting things up and running and seeing if people want to continue to use this service. We also need to think about Federation, which is the only way for us to gain new members if Reddit implodes. Right now we are private and not Federated.
Things I will be working on in the near term is automating the daily SOTD and DQT posts, putting together the rules, etc. So please just play nice in the sandbox while those things are getting going.
Thanks for joining on this post-Reddit adventure, I’m looking forward to seeing where it brings us.
Late to the game, but… I like it already. Feels like home almost right away, once I got the dark theme set :P
/edit: I approve of the use of King Gillette’s first patent as the image in the side bar btw ;)
Yeah, Lemmy is much more my speed than other federated/open source social media I’ve used. Not surprising because Reddit was my favorite social media.
I appreciate you recognizing the patent, didn’t know what else to put there. Ultimately I want to set up the sidebar contest again for that space!
@merikus@sub.wetshaving.social I blocked @BeefButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social on my account, and this seems to work.
I wonder why I don’t see any comments here.
I see your comment. Do you see mine?
Yes, but I don’t see anyone else’s.
This is already looking like a good alternative. It’s good to see an option that resembles reddit. Thanks for setting this up @merikus@sub.wetshaving.social !
Happy you’re enjoying it!
Awesome, this seems like an improvement–way faster, no trackers/ads and the community has control of the platform. Thanks for coordinating it!
Happy you’re enjoying it! If you’re interested in exploring communities on other Lemmys, I posted something over in !ws_server_announce@sub.wetshaving.social about how to easily find communities across the Lemmyverse.
Thanks! I actually found this instance via https://browse.feddit.de/ :)
So happy to hear that! Our group came from a Reddit community and we were worried if we would find any new members if we moved to Lemmy. Great to hear that you were able to find us that way. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Will do! Been a regular lurker at r/wetshaving for a few years now, posted way more on r/wicked_edge though because I was more likely to see people’s questions there. I do see how it makes things more organised but the daily threads really don’t click with my idle browsing habits alas.
That’s understandable. One thing I really like about Lemmy is the ability to browse my home feed by new comments. Finding that really makes it easier for me to keep up on things in the community.
Since we have a whole instance now do you think it might be worth considering something like c/AskWetshaving? Seems like it could be the best of both worlds: people who don’t mind seeing the same questions asked over and over can subscribe to that community and those who just want to pop in now and then can do that too without the noise cluttering up their feed.
This is a great question. One thing that we’re trying to balance is keeping the feel of the original subreddit while also getting the full utility out of the new Lemmy format. I think that our hope is that people who are interested in traditional wet shaving will find !wetshaving@sub.wetshaving.social and get the full experience there: SOTD thread, DQT, weekly threads (once I get that bot to start working…), etc. However, some members have suggested that we could have more specialized communities that may not get as much traffic but could be a good resource if people want to see more specialized content. So, for example, @iamsms@sub.wetshaving.social set up !de_razors@sub.wetshaving.social for more specialized DE razor content.
I think it’s all a work in progress at this point. I could see the benefit of /c/askwetshaving but I’m worried it would kill the DQT thread, which has been an important part of the community culture.
Did I do it right?
This got me thinking. We have the barn, the ranch, the coop, and this is what? The sugar shack?
Yay, thanks for setting this up!
I vote we should absolutely federate from day one. It’s how we will grow.
I agree that makes sense, and my preference will be for us to Federate as soon as we get out of alpha!
Alpha is the best moment to try federation, though 😄
Neat
I like the idea of a Reddit-y formatted social media hub. I don’t really see the value of the Tweeter-styled social media hub for wetshaving, myself; can’t imagine I’ll join the Mastodon thing.Yeah, this seems like a much better fit for our community. Unsurprisingly 😅
where are the shaving feetpics
I aim to please…
Alright. Let’s see how this works.
Welcome to the Salty Spittoon! How tough are ya?
Am I doing it right?
Welcome!
