Calverton Park’s ordinance ‘prohibits property owners from having an unlicensed and/or inoperable car on the property.’

The city confirmed that since December 2020, there’s been a total of 350 violations and 81 vehicles towed away. If the vehicle is towed away, the city will also issue an abatement fee.

Attorney Jeff Schwartz said Missouri law clearly states that a car can’t be towed from private property unless it’s a safety hazard, or at the request of the property owner. He said trying to argue an expired tag is also a safety hazard is a stretch.

Now I know that we’re at meme status when it comes to expired temp tags, but this seems a bit much. Where’s the victim in that crime? Does it really warrant stealing someone’s car from them? If the person couldn’t afford the taxes in the first place, how do they expect them to afford to get it out of the impound and pay the taxes, when they can’t drive to work? I suppose the answer is that they don’t, and they just like ruining lives.

I wonder, will it change anything now that dealerships are required to collect taxes at time of sale? I guess that still won’t affect personal sales.

They should put everyone on the city council who supports this in jail if I stole 1 car they would put me in jail for at a minimum 1 year probably longer but these guys can steal 350+ and run what’s basically an illegal chop shop and get nothing

Well, 81 vehicles stolen by the city and 350 expired tag violations. But yeah, definitely some bullshit.

Sucks for that lady, hope she can get some pro bono lawyer to take up her case. I don’t understand how a city can argue that it’s allowed to essentially steal someone’s car off of their private property.
