Alaska’s continental shelf and North American plate rose over 9 meters during the earthquake. This sudden displacement of the ocean floor, along with earthquake-induced landslides, generated massive local tsunamis that resulted in 70 percent of the fatalities in southern Alaska. The tsunamis created by the earthquake reached land within a few minutes of the ground shaking and engulfed some areas as much as 170 feet above sea level. Scientists measured a wave runup of 220 feet in the Valdez Inlet.
I learned it from reading this post:https://sh.itjust.works/post/14455184
Tsunami? What about the freakin QUAKE?!? It was a 9.2! Yeah, there was some water action after a 9.2.
I’m dealing with a site that was actually impacted by this, lol.
What do you mean?
You accidentally mix metrics and the old feet system, so a quick public service for the meter-fans: 170 feet is nearly 52 meters, and 220 feet is 67 meters.
I wish this site had more pictures of the aftermath. It was incredible that an earthquake would do that much damage.
I’m not sure if you didn’t see his post by accident or he’s not on your instance, but /u/memfree@lemmy.ml posted receipts. The Life Magazine one is crazy.
