is going to launch a store for to buy and rent movies and TV shows

The quality of journalism these days is just bad. I guess the process now is just type something up, or have some crapgpt spit something out, and then post it with no editing whatsoever.

On topic: 'Olechowski said that the company has a “pretty major UX refresh” in the works to help support the many people using Plex to watch ad-supported movies and TV shows and FAST (free, ad-supported streaming) channels." ’ Wow, way to totally not read the room there Plex. I use Plex to store my digital collection so that I do NOT have to see ads. They have totally lost sight of what the majority of their users picked up their program for and they are just running in the wrong direction in my opinion. Dear Plex, I would rather re-watch a movie I have in my collection a hundred times over, than watch something with ads. Yep, I detest them that much.

“Wow, way to totally not read the room there Plex.”

Don’t be so sure. My wife recently discovered that she enjoys watching eighties shows targeted to “The Silent Generation” while she works (background noise). Stuff like Golden Girls and Murder She Wrote. I loaded both those shows on my server but after multiple rewatchs she clicked on the suggested ad supported shows like Matlock and Columbo.

Normally what happens is that she’ll watch the ad supported stuff for a couple of hours or days before she gets annoyed and moves on. If it was something she really liked, she’ll ask me to “find it” but most of the time a lot of the stuff on FAST is not worth the storage capacity. Still, it makes the company a few bucks and it prevents less than stellar media from being completely forgotten.
