    The easiest way (uh-oh) to stymie a “helpful” person suggesting one simple change with an “all you need to do is…” before it, is to ask them “How?”

    Them: “What?”

    You: “How do I do that?”

    Them: “Well… you… just do it.”

    You: “That’s no help. I don’t know how to do that. Tell me how.”

    Them: “It’s easy. Just do it.”

    You (weary, never angry): “It’s nice that it comes so naturally to you. It doesn’t come naturally to some people. If it’s so easy, explain how you do it.”

    I’ve never gotten beyond this point, though admittedly it’s only a small number of people I’ve used it on. One quit at “How?” because they were smart enough to see where it was going, and another quit at the end.
