I want to grow some herbs. Obviously not to today. Chives, basil you know the easy shit but I’m worried about animals urinating on things I’m gonna eat. So here’s my idea. I have a portacot, if I put herbs in there and put a shade cloth of the top, it should work right? I can even put wheels on it. Where would the best place to put it? Shade or full sun?
I would grow them indoors on a window sill. Truly the thought of animal pee has never occurred to me, I wash all food I grow anyway, including fruit from the trees.
Half the day. Chives are tough. Could probably survive on the windowsill if you have a self-watering pot for them and remember to top it up. Might get a bit brown at the tips in full western sun on a hot day, but will still be edible. They do need to be cut back BEFORE they flower to keep them productive. Even though the flowers are pretty - little pom poms of pale purple. They do need feeding with liquid fertiliser such as charlie carp or seasol or similar for fast growth.

Yeh just wash everything you eat and it really shouldnt be an issue. We do a bit of foraging locally and just make sure everything gets a good wash
That seems like a good idea. Thank you.

My window sills get the afternoon sun. Would that be a problem for chives?
When I had westward facing windows I placed a a table about a metre from the window and put my plants on that.
Ok. I’ll start with chives then. One last question if you may, what would be the minimum amount of sunlight it would take to grow chives?

No idea.
I’ll work it out. Thanks anyway. You’ve given me some good ideas.
