My favorite analogy is email- it doesn’t matter if you have @gmail, @outlook, or even disgusting ones like @yahoo or @hotmail, you can send and receive emails using the same protocols between any of them.
Right. But we’re talking specifically about the differences between KBin and Lemmy. Lemmy.one, VLemmy.net, and Lemmy.ml are all Lemmy backends - look identical. KBin.social is not a Lemmy backend but incorporates the functionality required to operate with those instances the way they expect (upvotes, downvotes, etc). KBin also has functionality to work with Mastodon instances (Boost, favorite, etc).
