I think this decentralization and federation is what web3 is all about, without all the corporations calling everything to do with monkey pixel art that costs a million dollars “web3”
It actually feels old school to me, like LiveJournal in the late 90s and internet relay chat and BBSs, especially the technical issues and the smaller number of users. Faster connections and smart phones with cameras allowed social media to turn into endless feeds of selfies and people trying to sell a branded version of themselves to impress everyone else instead of being authentic and talking about mutual interests.
