    We also had a ridiculous amount of tanks next to the Fulda Gap. And we put a lot of nazis who were previously involved in the invasion of the USSR in NATO and west German positions.

      Exactly, because NATO saw them as a credible threat.

      Hell, France’s stated doctrine if they did break through was to use tactical nukes on them in West Germany to halt the advance and to avoid turning more of their territory into red zones.

        Our defense their threat

        Maybe they were worried about being invaded again by countries that had all invaded them over the last 30 years: France, US, Britain, Germany, the last of which killed 26 million soviet citizens, 1/6th of their population.
