The few I’ve used seen to have some ways. Some (BOOX devices) can use android apps so syncing isn’t a huge thing. I don’t have experience with kobo unfortunately.
I recall seeing that someone authored a tool to deal with this on Kobo, but it seemed janky when I looked at it (sorry I don’t have a link handy). This is something the manufacturers should offer or, at a minimum, better support.

Amazon’s book/data know how really helps them. I don’t think kobo has such scalability (though I know rakutan is a massive company as well).
