Possible counter-point. Or, just another person’s take. And here I go half-doxing myself.
I (40something) grew up at just the right age when swears became commonplace NOT because we were rebellious, but because we were desesnsitized. I know a lot of people my age who feel that self-censored gives them more visceral edgy reaction than actually swearing. And I have had the same feeling/experience. I mean, it’s about the intended effect. Everyone I know swears in front of toddlers nowadays and nobody gasps like they would have 20 years ago. Online, you hear celebrities talk about “my fucking problems” like they’re not swearing at all.
But when I see those stars or hear a beep… especially if it’s in a situation where there’s not always censoring and/or the person is getting emotional, then you know it’s THAT kind of swear instead of the everyday kind of swear. And it HAS that whole feeling. The message is communicated by “f*ck” better than “fuck”, at least to viewers like me.
Or maybe I’m just insane. Hell, maybe my whole generation is.
