Lemmy.ml/c/ps5 is moving to Lemmy.world/c/ps5 - Lemmy.World

Why? > > ##### Reason #1: Inciting Incident > * As some of you may be aware, the
country of Mali is apparently beginning to talk back .ml top level domains. This
has already affected other communities and has the potential to affect lemmy.ml
[http://lemmy.ml] (See here for context [https://lemmy.world/post/1921928]).
This is preemptive act to ensure that what we have build so far is not
destroyed. > > ##### Reason #2: This community does not align well with lemmy.ml
[http://lemmy.ml] > * Lemmy.ml [http://Lemmy.ml] is a FOSS focused instance. At
the time of the creation of lemmy.ml/c/ps5 [http://lemmy.ml/c/ps5], lemmy.world
was not even on the map. I established this community very early before the
reddit migration and wanted to establish it on what I believed at the time was
the “flagship” instance for better discoverability. A lot has changed since
then, and I believe this change will be in the best interest of this community
moving forward. The Admins on lemmy.world have been wonderful and responsive,
and I trust lemmy.world will be a great home for us. > * Other people have
personal issues with the lemmy.ml [http://lemmy.ml] instance and its admins, so
while this move will help others who dislike lemmy.ml [http://lemmy.ml]
confidently join our community, it is not the primary reason for migrating. > >

question. I would love to hear back from other community members on this
subject. My initial plans are to pin this thread indefinitely at the top and
cease posting news to this community. I will post weekly cross-posts in this
community to the discussion threads on lemmy.world/c/ps5, which will have the
comments locked, and a comment recommending others subscribe to the new
community. > * For other users posting here, I will still allow posts, but I
will comment in each thread with a reminder to post to the new community. I do
not intend to lock these posts at this point in time, however if substantial
discussion is happening in these threads I may lock them down. > > — > > Please
let me know your thoughts below! > > -Cosmic > > P.S. Special thanks to
@Hurts@lemmy.world [https://lemmy.world/u/Hurts] for transfering me the new
community!
The ps5 community from Lemmy.ml is planning to migrate.
This… is an important test and something to study. Migrations across the Lemmy-verse are untested. I’m going to keep a close eye on this community and seeing if it works out for them.
But why though? Is this so one day it can connect with Threads since .ML won’t and .World will?
No. .ml is being repossessed by the mali government and no one knows what will happen then. All .ml may lose their rights to their domain. I do disagree with moving to lemmy.world though, too much of lemmy is already concentrated on that instance even if it is so far very stable (except for the ddos).
I was investigating lemmy.zip recently prior to the Mali news, and if I had more time I would likely have chosen differently. Hopefully if lemmy.ml is actually at risk, the devs will prioritize a community migration tool for their own survival. If a migration tool is made, I will consider moving again.
I’m the PS5 mod if that wasn’t clear
I’m the PS5 mod. I have no interest in threads. Click through to the actual post where I state my reasons.
Tldr: Mali is reclaiming .ml top level domains which puts lemmy.ml, and by extension my community, at risk.
No one on threads is going to be interacting with Lemmy communities in any meaningful way. It’s an incredibly janky and annoying experience following groups from microblogging interfaces.
what? .world is federating with threads? when was this decided/announced? threads is awful, and it makes me sad to think we’re federating with them now :(
.world is just not preemptively blocking. They made a whole post about it. Threads currently doesnt federate with anyone, so there’s nothing to block.
