J. K. Rowling is a transphobe and a bigot.
Yes, and you can’t divorce the fact that she profits from all official media associated with the Harry Potter and paying for said media inescapable enriches her more. However, it is also true that the team that made this game did an amazing job of a creating a hogwarts/ Wizarding world that feels real and amazing, that they do not support her bigotry, and that they included a non-token well-respected open trans character (voiced by a trans voice actress) who is a recurring NPC on the main quest line of the game and gets to share more of her story as full side quest too. Supporting the game is not, in itself, support of trans bigotry. It’s complicated.
I said almost the exact same thing in another comment in another thread about this exact thing.
It’s like the devs went out of their way to distance their game from JK Rowling at all, with the inclusion of the trans character. Plus the inclusion of the lesbian witches, and the fact that a good chunk of the NPCs in the game aren’t white or British. And the fact the game’s story doesn’t deal with bloodlines and purity and such.
It gives her money for her hobbies, which at this stage are mostly stoking hatred against trans people. As such, any purchases of this game fund anti-trans hate campaigns. The fact that there is a trans character in the game which funds anti-trans hate campaigns doesn’t redeem it, but if anything, it’s a gesture of contempt (“these idiot wokelings will buy us the rope we’ll hang them with!”)
