    they would have rather worked together

    The USSR spent the 30s trying to form an alliance with literally everyone in Europe to fight the guys who declared communism their enemy. The western allies expected Germany and Poland to invade the USSR, for them fascism was the answer to communism, hence why they gave the Sudetenland to Germany and Poland, made the Anglo-German declaration of 1938, and why Britain tried to join the Winter War, but was only stopped by Sweden refusing transit.

    The USSR wasn’t trying to work with Germany, they were taking the only path that would give them time to build up and draw the rest of Europe into its war with Germany.
