The best part of video games back in the day was making memories with your friends, now it all feels like structured fun. “This is how you play the game and this is when you are supposed to have fun” Idk if that makes sense.

    Well said overall, OP is losing the magic a bit. They have a point as I think 1997 to 2001, 2004 to 2007, and 2017 through 2019 stand out in my mind far above the rest in terms of groundbreaking games and the quantity of them. 2023 has been a good year so far though, with promise of games yet to come.

    With that said, I went through a period in my life between 2009 and 2016 where gaming took a huge backseat. That was not a good stretch where most console games lost the magic and classics from yesteryear were not as accessible as they are today. PC gaming and indies began to thrive during that stretch, but I would not say it was a great period overall, with a few exceptions.
