India's first indigenously developed 700 MW nuclear power reactor has started commercial operations at the Kakrapar Atomic Power Project in Gujarat. The reactor is currently operating at 90% of its total power capacity. The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) plans to build sixteen 700 MW pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) across the country, with two under construction at Kakrapar.
