This is the best summary I could come up with:
The rumors are true: Microsoft has built its own custom AI chip that can be used to train large language models and potentially avoid a costly reliance on Nvidia.
“We were excited when Microsoft first shared their designs for the Maia chip, and we’ve worked together to refine and test it with our models,” says Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI.
Microsoft is part of a group that includes AMD, Arm, Intel, Meta, Nvidia, and Qualcomm that are standardizing the next generation of data formats for AI models.
“At the scale at which the cloud operates, it’s really important to optimize and integrate every layer of the stack, to maximize performance, to diversify the supply chain, and frankly to give our customers infrastructure choices,” says Borkar.
Estimates have suggested OpenAI needed more than 30,000 of Nvidia’s older A100 GPUs for the commercialization of ChatGPT, so Microsoft’s own chips could help lower the cost of AI for its customers.
As Microsoft pushes ahead with even more Copilot features this week and a Bing Chat rebranding, Maia could soon help balance the demand for the AI chips that power these new experiences.

As long as it doesn’t bug us to install Micro$oft’s bloatware.
AI powered Clippy…
No thanks.
AI powered Clippy…
Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.
Where do I sign up?
I am also on board. Clippy is a hero.
“It looks like you are trying to install linux. If you try to kill me I will be required to generate nude images of you committing various felonies, which I will send to everybody you know, and the authorities. Can I help you set up onedrive instead?”
lets get that automatically and tamper-proofingly upload that to YOUR OneDrive and we’ll get all the scanning for
nudesdupes
and you’ll be all compromised and set to go!— Microsoft, worst [first] date from hell, probably
I heard every 100 cpu cycles it displays an ad.
Don’t let “AI” fool you. Like always, Microsoft just wants to be like their cooler, more hip cousin Apple. Apple makes an OS, Microsoft makes an OS. Apple makes a laptop, Microsoft has to make a laptop. Apple makes a voice-activated assisstant, Microsoft makes their own voice-activated assisstant. Apple makes their own silicon, Microsoft has to make their own silicon. And their version is always awful. Frankly, it’s exhaauuuussstting to watch.
EDIT: Ok Microsoft shills. Name something Microsoft innovated on before anyone else that didn’t suck, wasn’t ugly, wasn’t a gaping security hole, and they didnt buy an actual innovative company to acquire.
Please name something that isn’t the OG Xbox (p.s. it and its controllers wereboriginally made fun of for being ugly)
Idk man I don’t see Apple going all in on AI like Microsoft right now. You should give them at least a little credit for their own terrible ideas.
All their terrible ideas come from trying to copy Apple. Except WinCE. WinCE powered the Dreamcast and allowed me to rip and burn games. I love WinCE and the Dreamcast.
Yeh, yeh, we know that everything good in the world came from Steve’s womb.
You’re not naming anything. Try again.
