tl;dw - the material that Gore-Tex originally patented turned out to be really bad for the environment and they stopped using it, modern Gore-Tex is functionally nothing more than a brand name.

I’m not sure if it’s due to similarities in channels or Youtube just happened to drop another load of reactionary crap at just that moment, but I had to block like five videos on the sidebar when I clicked for that video. (Ben Shapiro, some other Islamaphobic nonsense, an incel channel, and some guy complaining about Spiderman being woke). I dunno, maybe something else tripped the wire to let loose a flood of bigoted nonsense.

Don’t think the video specifies, but they switched in 2021. The way you can tell is that the material actually got better when they switched. The only reason they were still using ePTFE at that point was for brand reasons.

The real trick (and what the video doesn’t mention) when buying waterproof garments is to only buy 3 layer construction, and then use your own insulating layers. 3 layer means the inner layer is bonded to the membrane which makes it both far more durable and lighter weight than 2 or 2.5 layer construction. Especially never buy anything 2.5 layer, they’re the worst of all worlds: generally the least durable, least breathable, and most likely to clog up the pores.
