What would a largely deterministic society look and behave like? Would it be, as some imagine, a more merciful and just society, or as some others suppose, a veritable wasteland where lawless immorality, cruelty, and hopelessness reign supreme? In this video I hope to answer this contentious question and to bring some clarity to an otherwise esoteric matter.

For this particular work I have taken much from the philosopher Spinoza, the psychologist Robert Sapolsky, and the Neuroscientist/philosopher Sam Harris. I have found their insights to be extremely helpful in clarifying my own thoughts on the matter and I encourage you to read or listen to their thoughts on Determinism and free-will.

Society is already deterministic (or at least not controlled by us, you can argue for quantum randomness). People still behave like they have free will.
You don’t need to ask what a deterministic society would look like, you live in one. Events are manfactured snapshots. Reality is actually an unbroken causal stream. It doesn’t matter to you if we live in a deterministic reality because you can’t perceive it. To you, reality seems dependent on choices. Think about that. Does that really seem possible?
I don’t get it. Where is All Moral Value, who is Rob, and why is he The Human Experience? Is it his wrestler name?
I already responded to this in the other community, whish we could combine posts from separate communities on different instances into one. Only annoying thing about federation.
In this case, once more instances are aware of the PeerTube channel (!letstalkphilosophy_channel@tilvids.com), I think you could reasonably point to comments over there as the official primary discussion. On my instance it already shows up as a crossposted discussion.
