I’m looking for a free and open source todo application that works/syncs with both iOS and Windows. I currently use Google Calendar + Tasks, and want to get as far away as possible from them. Any recommendations?

Joplinapp - has an iOS and windows app (Linux, android and freeBSD too) ,u can sync it using nextcloud.;-)
I’ve been using it for a while and it’s great. It also has the option to encrypt all the notes.
Syncthing + todo.txt, with simpletask cloudless for Android, and qtodotxt for desktop.
Boom, a synced to do list on all your devices, E2ee encrypted.
I use this exact same Syncthing+Todo.txt combo, not too many of us using Todo.txt these days it seems. This later add-on is cool for snoozing and scheduling stuff.

Ya the main reason it’s not used is because development spec has basically stopped. I opened up a ticket on their github like 3 years ago to add multi - line notes, and it’s dead in the water.

I wouldn’t even care that much, the main thing was I asked the maintainers of a few clients how great this feature would be, it would turn todo.txt into a notebook application, but the app developers all said to :(. Too much work to add to their parsers.

Taskwarrior is the best todo application that ever existed. Unfortunately it’s only Linux.
Joplin is probably the next best thing in your case.

Opentasks is just about the perfect FOSS android task app imo. It can sync with Nextcloud via DavX, and you can get your own free nextcloud instance on Disroot, so you can see the tasks from your phone on a web-based interface.
So you still have your tasks even if you accidentally drop your phone in a river and an intelligent octopus finds it and reformats it.

I also use Nextcloud NOTES and TASKS which have the ability to sync across devices with their mobile apps (adroid and iOS I believe). You’ll need either a Nextcloud installation (Yunohost) or a free Nextcloud account. I’d suggest either Disroot.org or do your own search for instances on the Nextcloud official site.
To add to this, what you really need to do is replace GOOGLE all together. This is where Nextcloud comes in. Docs, notes, tasks, file upload etc … they’ve got it all.
alternativeto.net might have some good ideas. I always look there.
I use todo.txt and sync it with android via SyncThing. Dunno a good way to get it onto iOS because I’m on Android, but todo.txt is from one of those TwiT people who love iPhones so there’s something out there.
yes iphone is ik SwiftoDo works well and sync correctly
I use nextcloud (and DavX for syncing with Android, I dunno about iOS.) I use Thundebird as the front end on the PC

Since Wekan surfaced, awesome self-hosted list has ~ 20 more options of that sort.
I use syncthing to sync files between various PCs, my phone, and VPS. For calendar/to-do stuff I use Emacs org-mode on desktop and Orgzly on Android. There are still some things that I find lacking in comparison to Thunderbird with a calendar synced to Android, but it’s not bad.

Standard Notes I found it but I don’t try it yet. It’s look like great. Open-source, cross-platform, encrypted. If someone knows it, give us some feedback :)
I tried it, but uninstalled almost immediately, because the free version has no Markdown support. :\
Self hosted Wekan as a kanban todo list, essentially. Supports due dates, tags, comments, checklists, etc. It works on mobile, but I personally don’t use it on mobile much. Starting off with eg. backlog, this week, now, and done is a good start. Add columns as you need. Eg. I also have a column for waiting/delegated, dropped, and reading list.
NextCloud Tasks if you want something very bare bones. Connect to the Open Tasks F-Droid app.

I really like Joplin as it can do TODOs and general notes and syncs with all my devices (Android, Linux, Windows) via my Nextcloud instance.
joplin developers are very lazy :D so big potential… but they do things like babies… thnking about fork it and speedup development… i really dont understand what is problm to make saved serches, share extensions on mobiles and o… it is almost basic in all tutorials and super simple with react native… also there is no option to make bigger font on mobile… so its hard to read notes on mobile…
It might not be perfect (on Windows it’s constantly nagging me to upgrade to the next version) but it fulfills 90% of my needs for notes and TODO and it’s pretty lightweight on all platforms which I like.
I wish I had time to fork all the things I’d like to improve in these apps but then I’d get nothing else done!
yes you are right i use it also as main note taking… but not todo… and i really dont understand why they have tagging here and very poor searching… i really miss saved search like evernote, it would make this app unbeatable…
