Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the latest PlayStation game ported to PC. While it got attention thanks to the use of DirectStorage 1.2, its launch numbers are quite unimpressive compared to SIE’s other first-party titles on Steam.
Sony keeps making the same mistakes:
- Full price for an old game
- Little to no marketing
- Crap ports making people wary
- Releasing a sequel when the original is not on PC
I think the first one is the biggest problem, I’m not paying full price for a 3 year old game that is heavily discounted on the PS5.
Fourth one is the biggest offender to me personally. I’m not gonna play one random game out of a series of like 10 games if I can’t play the others.
It’s the same reason gears of war 5 did poorly on PC, the game looks cool but I have no idea what is going on.
Honestly, I found Gears 5 worse than 4. Less tight, more bloat and filler, and a totally unnecessary and slow “Open World” section where you slowly sail around a big winter map looking for collectibles and places to go. Killed the flow for me, and I couldn’t finish it, even though I was playing it on Game Pass for a fraction of the box price.
The storyline was totally ridiculous as well, total shit. And yes, that’s even considering that this is a Gears of War game.
Edit: If you want to know what’s going on in Gears of War by the way, the first game (which is remastered I think) is a good place to start for the original trilogy, and the 4th game is the start of the “New” trilogy, which is not yet completed. I’m sure Gears 6 will be out eventually, but for now it’s not out yet. If I had to choose between Gears 4 and Gears 1, I would say 1 is the better game.
Rift Apart is a very good game that is enjoyable without playing the rest of the series. The story is pretty self contained, even though it’s referential.
I’ve owned every Playstation. I think Rift Apart was the only Ratchet & Clank I actually properly played all the way through and completed.
I have too many other big games currently to play to get ratchet and clank full price 3 years after it came out. It’s on my wish list. When I see a good sale and I’ve gotten through my backlog a bit it might look more tempting
The little to no marketing is also really hurting them. I didn’t even know until well after it was out that Returnal was even getting a PC release - the first I heard of it was news of its disappointing sales. Same with Ratchet and Clank - first I heard they weren’t sure how they’d port it because of memory demands, then this now about the low number of players. Like. If no one knows it’s coming out (or even has come out until there’s bad press), no one’s gonna buy your game.
Little to no marketing is spot on. I heard it was gonna come out through social media.
I heard it came out when I stumbled upon it on torrent site
For me, it’s 100% your first bullet. It looks like a fun game but no way am I paying $80 Canadian for it.
I would add to that lack of support for DualShock haptic feedback and adaptive triggers over Bluetooth on pc. So we are paying full price for in some ways inferior product
I played rift apart on ps5 cause I got it for free with the console. And while it’s an enjoyable game I started playing it and not sold immediately because I was curious about DualShock features(and they are good in this game)
I will add that I am about 2 hours into it and its a good port though. No stutters or anything and looks great.
Having played 20ish hours of Rift Apart, this port is pretty good. Still, I understand previous issues make people hesitate
Yep. The last one is my biggest problem. I was fully aware of it, honestly probably willing to pay $50-$60, and heard it’s a decent port, but being that I’m not a PlayStation gamer, I never played the originals, so I’m not ready to play this one. If they had released the Ratchet & Clank remake first, I would have snatched that up.
IMHO it makes absolutely sense. Much more niche of an IP, very expensive for an older game (once again), LoU port was really bad so many would be wary of the newer release…
I don’t think Sony can get away with releasing sub-par PC ports like The Last Of Us without it impacting on their other games. This stuff doesn’t happen in a vacuum, it has knock on consequences to all their other PC releases.
To go with what other people are saying, in addition to it launching at full price, it also came out in a year with a ton of other high profile releases just a month or two ago. Between Diablo 4, Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy 16, it’s hard to justify buying this game at full price if someone had already bought even one of those other games.
Personally, I’ll maybe get it when it goes on sale on PC, but for now I don’t feel like paying $60 for it.
It’s $60 for what is ultimately a really good tech demo but a pretty short and forgettable Rachet and Clank game. I’d say it’s worth about $30. Also makes the same mistake as Uncharted, it’s the 16th game in the series. Lots of people are discouraged playing that deep into a franchise.
Are the ports actually good? I haven’t played any yet, but I also haven’t heard anything specifically bad about them.
Has a texture bug and some raytracing issues. Also, raytracing doesn’t work at all on AMD cards at the moment.
