Covert government strategy to install electronic surveillance in shops raises issues around bias and data, and contrasts sharply with the EU ban to keep AI out of public spaces.
If they actually wanted to tackle shop lifting they’d tell the police they actually need to bother about it even if it’s less than £200 in value.

To stop shoplifting.
Sure, sure
They don’t mind us being spied on, provided it’s not the Chinese doing the spying I guess?
Optimistic of you to think these people can safeguard our data.
Fuck this government.
Inb4 this does jack shit to stop shoplifting.
Not because the government have an ulterior motive or because the tech is bad at identifying people, but because the police won’t do anything as they’re too busy being ambush rapists.
Despite making records profits, supermarkets want to apply fascist-level tech to profit even more.
I don’t see what that has to do with any political ideology. China claims to be a communist country and the situation there regarding surveillance is much worse.
Most shops have CCTV to stop (attempt to prevent) shoplifting. Literally what is the difference here? Instead of an old bobby doing the pattern recognition of matching a face a computer will help.
It’s time to stop with this AI boogeyman theme.
