Came thru just fine, so apparently the answer is yes. Hello, this is Infectious Disease, do you have a moment to talk about aerosols?

Can we please not defile the word weirdo by making it about alt-right and far-right people?

I used to be a proud weirdo, but now it’s a far-right thing rather than a neurodiverse thing :(

You could try calling yourself eccentric instead. That was how the rich used to get away with their weirdness.

You could try calling yourself “off-the-wall” instead. That was how the skaters used to get away with their weirdness.

Note: I prefer the word “bizarro”.

Bizarro is reserved for your alternate dimension counterpart, that speaks in opposites and looks weird.

Native English speaker here. It can have a sexual meaning, depending on context. It’s not always like that though.

You might check out the Radiohead song “Creep” to hear it in this context:

When you were here before / Couldn’t look you in the eye / You’re just like an angel / Your skin makes me cry / You float like a feather / In a beautiful world / I wish I was special / You’re so fuckin’ special /

              But I’m a creep / I’m a weirdo / What the hell am I doin’ here? / I don’t belong here / I don’t care if it hurts / I wanna have control / I want a perfect body / I want a perfect soul / I want you to notice / When I’m not around… /

As a primary English speaker, weirdo doesn’t have any sexual meaning. Native speakers won’t see that.

Pervert fills that definition you’re looking for.

the thing is they aren’t and won’t claim it for themselves. claiming to being the normal/majority/default is super important to them and weird is the antithesis of that. we can claim weirdness for ourselves like we have for ages without anyone mistaking us as right wingers because of this. good weird vs bad weird has always been a thing, too.

at least, that’s my two cents on the matter. they may end up trying to claim it and take the wind out of it but i doubt it.

That’s a good point, ownership certainly makes a difference. I know I’m weird. Thanks :)

People that are offended by being called weird are the bad kind of weirdos.

Thanks for being a good weirdo! 🤩

Probably not till after November, my weird kin, (u/@ms_lane@lemmy.world). I’ve always found and appreciated finding myself in weird company. And yeah the cool, creative, nerdy, neurodivergent folx have always been around me. I’m sure I would have been drugged as a child had I been born later. As it was, I had to do it myself. ;-)
