Recently news went around about explicit sync being merged into Wayland protocols, and in the wake of that I saw a lot of people having questions about it, and why it was such a big deal… So here’s a short-ish explanation of what it is, why it’s needed and what the benefits are over the old model.

The explicit sync protocol is now merged into wayland. Making the lives of Nvidia users easier as it solves most of the graphical bugs and glitches that plague users who game on Xwayland. This along with the recent stable release of NVK in Mesa 24.1 makes it possible use an Nvidia card without the proprietary driver and not sacrifice performance.

torvalds-nvidia is now a relic of the past (for the most part, GSP firmware blobs as well as Nvidia itself are contemptible, but at least no one has to write a blog post explaining how to get hardware to work).
