Winter hiking on Mt. Lafayette, New Hampshire, USA.
This is phenomenal. Very jealous.
I still have to do Lafayette or any Whites in winter. Is it mostly spikes or need to also bring snowshoes? Presidentials has been one of my favourite hikes so far.
I carried both on Lafayette, and on all my winter hikes in the Whites. The trail conditions can vary a lot depending on altitude, exposure to wind, recent freeze-thaw cycles, etc.
I miss the Whites a lot. Didn’t finish bagging all the 4,000-footers before I moved away. Someday I want to go back and complete the list.
Ouch, looks harsh! A lot of postholing?
No postholing, thankfully. We had snowshoes on for the deep sections. Up here above treeline the rocks were well covered by a few inches of settled snow and ice. If I remember correctly, we were switching from snowshoes to microspikes in this picture.
