And here… we… go.

Hell yeah, I’ll never not be mad that our garbage justice system let him skate for this long, but it’s great to see he’s getting one step closer to the jail/prison cell where he belongs (though I’m just going to get mad all over again when they give him lenient bail; also, where’s the felony murder charge for pushing a violent coup that was the proximate cause of multiple deaths?).

Honestly, biggest surprise for me is seeing the Independent of all places get this scoop. They’re a fine publication, but they’re pretty U.K. based and not even as big as something like the Guardian, and normally when anything leaks out of DC circles it goes to NYT WaPo or PBS/NPR, so it’s weird to see them get this news.

    And from the bird site:

Federal prosecutors have notified Donald Trump that he is a criminal target and likely to be indicted imminently in a probe into alleged classified documents – even as the Justice Department declined to delay charges to give time to investigate allegations of witness tampering submitted by the former president’s legal team, according to multiple people on Wednesday familiar with the case

The guy making that tweet does not appear to be a journalist, and for the source for this he linked to this article on Just the News, who I’ve never heard of before and, based on another article from the same author on their home page that looks like it’s trying to spin a lot of evidence free allegations about Biden being involved in a bribery scheme with Ukraine as evidence that Biden actually was involved in a bribery scheme with Ukraine, does not seem like a good source

The Independent is a solid publication with a good track record of truth telling though, so I don’t doubt this story (and thank you for posting it!), but these links look like some grifters trying to legitimize themselves by hopping on to a real news story while it’s hot

I have heard of “Just the News”, having seen it linked to often on the right-wing site FreeRepublic.com. Now, while that says nothing for its legitimacy, I think it means something for a right-wing site to post a story that is such bad news for the right wing. Normally they spin or deny or flat make shit up to counter reality. If even they are saying it’s happening, maybe it really is finally happening.

Ah, sure, that makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to explain your thinking!

Let’s say this is true. Court proceedings will start how soon after? What does it look like if he’s the nominee and gets found guilty and sentenced. Would that mean the GOP would have no presidential candidate and the Dems win by default or would the person Trump selected as VP take up the mantle and would be the new nominee?

Guesses are three for a quarter, but I’ve got no hard answers to give you. I suspect no one does. It’s uncharted territory.

In theory, it changes nothing. There is no law against running for president from prison. In fact, Eugene Debs did this in the 1920 election, and got 3% of the vote.

In practice, if Trump were sentenced to prison before the election then the GOP would probably find a way to replace him with another candidate, just like when candidates die before election day.
