Iran says at least seven people, including four children, have been killed in missile strikes by Pakistan on Iranian soil, two days after Iran launched its own strikes in Pakistan.

Pakistan had warned Tehran there would be “serious consequences” for Tuesday’s attack, which it said killed at least two children in western Pakistan.

Multiple blasts were heard in Iran’s southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchistan on Thursday, according to state news agency IRNA.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry said it had conducted air strikes targeting Baloch separatist groups inside Iran. Several missiles hit a border village, officials in Tehran said.

Anyone know how it happened that none of those killed were Iranian citizens? The citizenship laws seem pretty accepting, considering (no mention of religion or ethnicity, so it sounds like the Jewish and Baloch populations are probably citizens), so it seems like either Iran is sheltering large numbers foreign nationals or like Pakistan has incredible precision and still killed children.

Eh… I know there’s about a million Afghan refugees in Iran that are considered internally displaced people. I think acquiring citizenship would be pretty hard for this population, especially considering they require a fair bit of documentation.

Feels like a new world war is right around the corner honestly. So many small conflicts that seem ripe to coalesce into something bigger.

I didn’t have this on my 2024 global conflict bingo card.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Iran on Tuesday carried out missile strikes on targets in Pakistan, saying they hit two bases connected to the militant group Jaish al-Adl.

Pakistan’s foreign office said the attack was an “illegal act” and condemned the “unprovoked violation of its airspace by Iran” which resulted in the death of two innocent children while injuring three girls.

In state media reports, which were later withdrawn without explanation, Iran said its paramilitary Revolutionary Guard targeted bases for the militant group Jaish al-Adl, or the “Army of Justice” in Pakistan.

The group, which seeks an independent Baluchistan and has spread across Afghanistan, Iran and Pakistan, acknowledged the missile strike in a statement shared online.

Jaish al-Adl, a Sunni militant group, has launched attacks on Iranian security forces along the border it shares with Pakistan in the southwestern region.

Pakistan was the third country to be struck by Tehran this week after earlier attacks on targets in Iraq and Syria, in a move that has further escalated the fears of conflict spreading across the Middle East.

Killing more children will surely teach them how wrong it is to kill children.
