  • Your answer does not follow since I did not say that compiling is what makes people knowledgeable. Gentoo isn’t merely compiling. Binpkg repos exist and suffice for a lot of users.

Gentoo is unique in that it explicitly gives you maximum freedom in designing your experience, at the same time it implicitly forces you to learn since there is no straight forward process of installing the OS and designing/tweaking your setup later on. If you mess up, you can’t just simply do a reinstall or go back any other way willy nilly (in most cases), you have to do the software equivalent of an open heart surgery. Going from Debian to Gentoo has a lot of friction associated with it.

Portage makes you read updates, and is very clear about issues. At every turn in Gentoo there are opportunities to learn. This comes at the expense of comfort, but it pays in other ways. You are better off understanding Gentoo as an exercise in minimalism.

Just as your initial assumption does not follow, neither does your suggestion that I’m implying users of other distros and OSes can’t become knowledgeable.

Have you ever even tried Gentoo or invested time to understand it?

I am sorry, I am an outsider, I believe it needs to be said very clearly what the US has been doing. It’s the most obvious thing, and for its obviousness it doesn’t get talked about at all because all fundamental critique is blended into constructive criticism that’s meant to improve and prolong the system instead of abolish it.

Yes, not all Israelis are “bad”, but most Israelis support the expansionist projects, just like most Americans have a very screwed up sense of nationalism, even some of the leftists (who’ll believe in the supposed forwardness of both the American revolution and the genocidal campaign that was manifest destiny.) I don’t “hate” US Americans, I simply am frustrated with the bullshit.

The US has such an odd social structure and a dependence on cheap imports. You wouldn’t be remissed to call it the landlord of the world because that is evident even in the behaviour of the slightly better off to well off US Americans who are able to travel the world.

The US was a mistake. So much about the country is hideous and vain. I genuinely instinctively trust people from Canada and Mexico more because I’ve had genuinely terrible interactions with US Americans on pretty regular basis. What people say about Israeli tourists holds true for Americans as well, the world has been forced to accept what the US has done to other places as morally good somehow.

This era is ending and I say to hell with the devil that is the American state

  • Signal appears to quite secure in terms of access to the concrete content of messages. The biggest problems I am able to identify seem to revolve around how metadata is handled, the need for a phone number, and Signal’s jurisdiction.

There are chat clients I won’t mention here for strategic reasons that manage to handle or sidestep these three problems rather well. These however are more obscure and you might not be able to convince everyone you’re talking to to switch, though of course you should still try to inform people of better alternatives.

  • I don’t know of any, that is why I wrote the post.

I find it’s more of a question what not to do. Basically avoiding bad practices.

Consider touching upon the following though:

    • QubesOS and full disk encryption on Linux if people are not ready to use Qubes
    • GrapheneOS
    • Basic anonymisation of photographs using GIMP and EXIF-Tool
    • PGP encryption
    • TOR and I2P, I2P is probably more secure
    • Alternative potocolls such as Meshtastic
    • Basic concepts like Locard’s principle and attack surface
    • Tiering of security
    • Why Instagram, Reddit and so on are beasts from hell (can still be used for promo and agitation but don’t shit where you eat, use seperate devices cf. previous point)
    • The eternal importance of degoogilng
    • Every relevant commercial OS being nothing less than spyware

  • its just that the party’s method of leadership and democracy have significant failings that prevent it from allowing the membership to enact any kind of popular will or vision

    Yeah, that is lassallean.

And they’re not social democratic insofar as they let in all kinds of political groups. They’re a reservoir for all manner of capitalism critical leftists. USPD

Also, they’re not revolutionary in the slightest. They have no proletarian, or even popular base at all. They’re only slightly less deep in the LARP than the ACP, which is a low bar. No wonder they have detached leadership. Thank you, you made me think about the PSL and now I can stand them even less.
